Madeleine's New Obsession

Long-standing blog readers may remember that when I first began this blog, Julia was going through a total Jesus, Mary and Joseph obsession.  Now, several years later, it is Madeleine who is obsessed with Jesus, especially with the soundtrack to what she calls "Jesus Christes Superstar."

She has been paying careful attention to which character is singing at any given moment, as well as to the plot that is unfolding throughout each song.  Sometimes she'll take me by surprise with her knowledge of what characters are about to enter the scene next.

MADELEINE: Mom?  Who's that SINGING right now?
ME: Well, right now someone is singing to Peter to say he saw Peter with Jesus, then Peter sings and denies it.
MADELEINE: Mom?  And NEXT it's gonna be Saint Mary MAGDELENE who sings.
ME: You're right!  How did you know that?
MADELEINE: Because!

Now that she's got the basic plot structure down, she's giving some really deep thought to the lyrics and adding her own acute observations as to what the characters are singing about.

JESUS: (singing) Take this cup awaaaay from meeeee, for I don't want to taaaaste its poison...
MADELEINE: Mom?  If Jesus took MY sippy cup away from ME, I would CRY.

Wow.  She REALLY gets it.

Her Jesus obsession extends beyond Jesus Christes Superstar, of course.  In fact, after she colored her own Sticky Sticky Stickers, she announced that she had made them for Daddy, and started taping them to the walls and windows as a special decoration for her father.  And what says Ethan Rowe more than this particular Sticky Sticky Sticker:

MADELEINE: Mom!  That's JESUS' BLOOD!

Despite her preoccupation with Jesus Christes, however, Madeleine is still making time for her other obsessions.  Today at the Y, she announced to me, "Mom, someone said 'Madeleine.'  And...it was Sumana, Julia's friend from SCHOOL!"

It was actually not Sumana, but instead was Julia's school friend Sydni.  But in Madeleine's eyes, all of Julia's school friends are Sumana.

And, of course, Madeleine and Julia both have plenty of time to discuss their "Hocus Pocus" obsession, even acting out the movie in the backyard with their baby-sitter on Monday.  Furthermore, Madeleine has been seeing "Hocus Pocus" characters around town.

MADELEINE: (pointing to the school crossing guard) Mom?  Why does THAT person look like one of the WITCHES from "Hocus Pocus?"

(Fortunately for the crossing guard, the witch in reference here is the sexy one played by Sarah Jessica Parker, so I suppose she could take Madeleine's remark as a compliment.)

I think it's pretty clear that Madeleine basically lives in a fantasy land here.  I mean, what else can you expect from a girl who dons a princess crown before even sitting on the couch to eat her Golden Grahams?:

ME: Ooh, Madeleine, are you a beautiful princess?
MADELEINE: Mom!  I'm NOT a princess, I'm a QUEEN!

Well, excuse ME, your highness!
