Band Assignment

Julia was really excited by one of her recent Band Assignments.

JULIA: Mommy, for Band, we have to play our instrument and record it for two minutes in the weirdest place we can think of.  I was thinking of either the trunk of the car, or the shower.

Julia settled on the trunk of the car, but then seemed to have reservations after coming to her decision.

JULIA: Mommy?  Will I *suffocate* if I try to play my flute in the trunk of the car?
ME: I doubt it.
JULIA: But what if I do?
ME: Why don't you ask Daddy if the thinks it's a safe idea?

After discussion with Ethan, Julia had switched locations and instead determined she would play her flute in the wheelbarrow.

This proved challenging upon second thought, as well.  Yesterday, in a panic about the amount of work she still had to do by late afternoon, Julia was hemming and hawing about her band assignment.

JULIA: I'm thinking of waiting to do my band recording tomorrow, but then what if I don't have TIME tomorrow-
ME: Do you want me to just record you quickly right now?
JULIA: No, because there are kids playing outside next door, and what are they gonna think when they see me playing my flute in a WHEELBARROW?
ME: Isn't that the point of the assignment?  Just tell them you're supposed to play your instrument in the weirdest place possible for school.
JULIA: No, but the wheelbarrow is all DIRTY, and it needs to be cleaned out.
ME: I can just put a towel inside it and then wash it if you want.
JULIA: No, that's still GROSS.
ME: Why don't you just play your flute in the shower instead?  Wasn't that one of your ideas?
JULIA: No, I don't feel like it.
ME: Do you want to just go in the backseat of the car instead of the trunk?
JULIA: I just don't FEEL like doing it today.
ME: Then do it tomorrow.
JULIA: Ohhhhhkay.

So, come today, Julia was getting ready to do her recording.

JULIA: I have to do my band recording.
ME: Okay.
JULIA: But Mommy?  I'm scared that if I play my flute outside, it will MELT.*
ME: It won't melt.
JULIA: But what if it DOES?
ME: Honey.  It won't. I used to march in parades and field shows for hours outside and my flute did not melt.  It's fine.
JULIA: (grumpily and slightly accusingly) But I don't FEEL like going in the wheelbarrow.

She said this as if someone was forcing her to go in the wheelbarrow.

ME: Then don't.  Do it in the shower.
JULIA: But...but...FINE. (picking up the music stand and tromping off to the bathroom)

I guess even the projects that are supposed to be fun require WAYYYY too much over-thinking and needless fretting.  Nonetheless, Julia pulled off a successful performance in our ugly, not recently cleaned, '50's stile pink tiled shower, so that should be a hit!

*It was 48 degrees out, BTW.

Small Group Games

Madeleine had an online Small Group meeting with her teacher and two class members this morning.  She was bursting to fill me in on the details after the session ended.

MADELEINE: Mommy.  So, we played "Would You Rather?" in small groups.
ME: I heard some of it. Wasn't there a question about not watching tv?
MADELEINE: Yeah.  Well, so my first question was: Would you rather go a whole year without using your computer or screens BUT you can watch tv, or go a year without dessert.  And I picked a year without screens, because: TV is my best friend, so if I can watch tv, then I don't really need my computer.  (silent pondering) Except then I couldn't keep writing FOTTB*....
ME: Well, you could write it by hand.
MADELEINE: And the NEXT question, I already knew my answer right away.  It was would you rather go on a one-week vacation to another country, or go on a four-week vacation around the US.
ME: Okay.
MADELEINE: I picked a one-week vacation to Nice.
ME: Yeah, we did love it there.
MADELEINE: And then the next question was: would you rather have a really STRICT teacher, but you learn something, or a really NICE teacher but you don't really learn anything.  I was the only one who picked the strict teacher, because I like learning things.
ME: Right.
MADELEINE: And then the next one was would you rather not eat any of your favorite foods for a year, or eat ONLY your favorite foods for a year.  And...even though they're not really HEALTHY choices, I picked my favorite foods.  Like, my TOP favorite food is salted caramel gelato, then pain chocolat, and then croissants.  So, like, croissants are KINDA healthy...
ME: Kind of.
MADELEINE: And, like, croissants and pain chocolat I ate for BREAKFAST in France...
ME: Yeah, they're okay breakfast foods.
MADELEINE: And I don't know what my other favorite foods would be, but I'm sure there's SOMETHING healthy in there.
ME: You like pasta.
MADELEINE: (shrugging indifferently)**
ME: And turkey meatballs.
MADELEINE: Yeah, I love meatballs.  (Brightening) And BESIDES, if I picked meatballs, then that automatically comes with OTHER healthy foods, like PEPPERS...
ME: Right.
MADELEINE: (thoughtful) Although...I *could* do without the zucchini.
ME: I know.
MADELEINE: But everyone else picked going without your favorite foods.  My teacher said she was afraid she might get SICK of her favorite foods if she had to eat them every day, and the other two kids said their favorite foods are not very healthy.

I guess Madeleine had no such worries.  As she said, croissants and pain chocolat are KIND of healthy, and she's sure there would be something else healthy in there.  And we all know she could NEVER get sick of salted caramel gelato, even if she had it every day (which she would, because she also picked having dessert every day over no screen time.)  So, to sum up, she'd pretty much just be hanging out in France eating croissants, pain chocolat, and gelato, and learning with a strict teacher, but we'd have no real way of keeping in touch with her unless she wants to send us paper letters that she wrote by hand.  Given our current restraints, I'd take that year too, Madeleine!

*FOTTB is "Founders of the Timeline Barrier," the book series Madeleine is writing and intends to publish.
**Did I miss the memo that plain buttered pasta is no longer Madeleine's top favorite food?

Zoomusic Recital

Last night we got to participate in a "Zoomusic" Recital.

What is a Zoomusic recital, you might ask?  I find myself desperately wanting to add a second "M" to the title because it sounds like a concert of zoo animal sounds, but we haven't descended that far into savagery yet (despite yesterday's post/video.)

This was a recital that took place using the Zoom conferencing app.  Families from households around the country performed either solo or ensemble works from their living rooms and garages.  We all muted our own microphones while listening to music from other households, unmuting only for applause.  For some reason, though, we Rowes all felt the need to whisper to each other should we need to talk during others' performances.  I guess our concert-attending etiquette continues to hold up even when we're watching on a computer with our mic muted.

This was a great reason for us all to put on real clothes, as we've all been pretty much living in sweatpants, leggings, flannel pj bottoms, and hoodie sweatshirts.

Look at how nicely we clean up just for a chance to be glimpsed on the computer by a handful of other people!:

We performed two pieces.  The first was a movement of a Bach triosonata for 2 flutes and piano.  Julia, Ethan and I made up the ensemble:

The second piece was something you've heard already if you're a faithful reader of this blog.  The trio I composed of "Speak for the Dead" from "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance" was our second performance piece, with Madeleine, Julia and I all on flute:

And today, well, we're back in our sweatpants, but at least we got to get glamorous for one night!

OMG

We have officially descended into savagery in the Rowe household.

The kids are literally crawling around the living room floor.

Madeleine is making animal hissing and growling sounds.

Julia is now hiding in her bedroom behind the closed door, mewling "I'm scaaaared!"

Madeleine is knocking on the door and growling while Julia screams "You're SCARING me!"

Guys.  This is what the state of the world has brought us to:

Somebody rescue me.

Flute Trio, Dark Crystal Style

So, remember back in the early fall when Madeleine was O.B.S.E.S.S.E.D. with the Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance?  She has gone through several other obsessions since, from Stranger Things to Keeper of the Lost Cities, but she still has a deep fan worship for those Gelflings and the Dark Crystal world.  What better way to show her fandom than by learning to perform her FAVORITE piece of music, "Speak for the Dead," on her newly learned instrument?  With school all online and no school band rehearsals, playing music at home is the only way to keep Madeleine working on her flute, which she only started learning this past school year.  I arranged a trio version of this piece so that the three Rowe flautists could play together.  Sometimes Madeleine even has her Deet and Rian Funko Pop figures sit on the piano as an audience while we practice.  They weren't there today, but YOU can be our audience, as we got it on video!:

I think the Podlings would be especially proud of our flutistry, no?

Greek Orthodox Easter

Orthodox Easter is here, and it was our first ever without leaving our house. No trip to church, although we got to attend the service virtually, singing "Christos Anesti" from home:

Note that Madeleine is sitting far behind. She was certain that I was somehow going to light her on fire with my candle.

The pickings were slimmer this year, but I was still able to put together Easter baskets for the kids, plus a small egg hunt in the backyard:

The best part of all for me was the homemade
gifts from the girls.

From Julia:

From Madeleine:

To all those celebrating today, Christos Anesti!

New Board Game

Madeleine's obsession with "Keeper of the Lost Cities" is still going strong, and she tapped into her creative talents yesterday to create a KOTLC board game!

Ethan and I were lucky enough to attend the debut of this game and join Madeleine as the first players.  I know it looks complicated, but don't worry: we got a whole run-down on how to play from the creator herself:

The game involved rolling dice and moving our game pieces along various ladders.  If we wound up on a NeverSeen symbol, we had to combine forces with other characters to defeat the NeverSeen.  Some of the various ways in which we unleashed our powers included singing opera, reciting the US states in alphabetical order, singing "My Country 'Tis of Thee," doing lunges, spinning around in circles, and frog-hopping around the living room.

Ethan and Madeleine, frog-hopping in order to unleash their telekinetic powers

Let's just say that we proved too powerful for the NeverSeen and all of our characters managed to beat them and make it to the end of the game board.

Madeleine sure isn't going to let this quarantine hamper her creativity!

Anecdotes

You can take the kid out of school...for weeks, and weeks, and weeks...but you can't take the school out of the kid.

After making herself a spinach salad:

JULIA: Does the spinach smell weird to you?
ME: (sniffing) No.
JULIA: Okay.  Because I was checking the DUE DATE, and it said March 31.

I guess we are delinquent in not returning our spinach by its due date.

And another update in the ever present weirdness in our household members: Madeleine, in addition to exclamining "MREER!" anytime a character on tv utters a bad word, has now taken to holding her nose in scenes in which a character smokes.  So that she can't smell it coming from the tv set?!?  Who knows with that kid.

Videos and Emails

As you may know, we have been making a lot of music in the Rowe household during our stay-at-home/social distancing.  After Julia's band teacher had complimented and then featured her recording of a section of band music (part of her online school assignment,) I encouraged Julia to send him a video of the two of us playing a flute duet.  Ethan also suggested she send a video of a trio we sang to her Select Choir teacher.

Seems like it should have been a simple task, but MAN did Julia hem and haw over it.

ME: There's no harm in just sending an email to let them know you've been doing some ensemble work at home.
JULIA: But emailing teachers is SCARY.
ME: What's scary about it?
JULIA: Because.  What if they say "You're TERRIBLE?"
ME: A teacher would never say that to a student.
JULIA: But what if they're like "You sound so bad."

As you can see, Julia was being really reasonable about it.

She finally conquered her fears and sent the emails, and lo and behold, she received warm and welcoming responses from both teachers.  Her band teacher ended his message with "Keep 'em coming!" and her Select Choir teacher started her message with "I am SO proud of you!!"

So, naturally, Julia was totally right to be so scared to send these videos along.

For those that haven't seen this on facebook, here is Julia singing a trio with Ethan and I:

She should totally be kicked out the music program at school for being so TERRIBLE, don't you think?

Birds

For the past three weeks, the girls have attended Sunday School via Zoom, sitting at our dining room table.  Because I'm always in their earshot, I have heard Father and Presvytera ask the kids to contributions to their weekly Kids' Newsletter.  Contributions such as artwork and poetry are encouraged, so last week Madeleine drew a picture and Julia wrote a poem.

This week, the newsletter's theme is birds, and both girls decided to write a poem.  Madeleine's came easily, but Julia really struggled.

Here's her first attempt, which was clearly not coming from an inspired place, given its basic second-grade writing quality:

Doves by Julia Rowe
Small white bird
sitting peacefully
In a tree.
Making a faint,
sweet,
coo...coo

That got scribbled out.

Here's attempt number two:

Doves by Julia Rowe
Peaceful

That's as far as she got on that one.

Another attempt:

(Untitled)
The pleasant
Melodious sound

That also got scribbled out.

Next:

(Untitled)
As the sunlight
creeps in
from behind the trees

This got scribbled out as well, as Julia remembered last week's poem also talked about sunlight creeping in.

Final attempt is a winner, I think:

A Bird's Song by Julia Rowe
As the morning light
creeps in
through the window
the whole room is flooded
with the joyous,
melodious
voices.
They may just sound
like chirps and tweets,
but really
they are the key
to opening up
a whole world of happiness.
A symbol of spring,
a symbol of the
most holy of spirits.

That one is way better than the white dove sitting in a tree attempt.  Sometimes a writer just needs to go through a few revisions before striking gold!

Madeleine's Book and My Bedroom

Madeleine and Julia are discussing the book series Madeleine is writing.  Madeleine has already typed up fifty pages of "Founder of the Timeline Barrier."

JULIA: How did you even get the idea of "Founder of the Timeline Barrier?"
MADELEINE: Homework.
JULIA: But, I mean...
MADELEINE: Homework, and being inspired by OTHER things.  Like "Keeper of the Lost Cities."
JULIA: Yeah, it's definitely inspired by "Keeper of the Lost Cities." It's like the same kind of title. "Founder OF THE Timeline Barrier," "Keeper OF THE Lost Cities..."
MADELEINE: Yeah, that's why I decided to change the name of the series to just the "Timeline Barrier" series.  Then each book will be "something" of the Timeline Barrier.  So, it's like "Founder of the Timeline Barrier," "Destruction of the Timeline Barrier," "Resurrection of the Timeline Barrier," "Power of the Timeline Barrier..."

I guess my kids don't need online school, if Madeleine is coming up with all of this to do in her own free time.

In my own free time, I have been painting my bedroom walls. Yesterday  I managed to plop my bottom down directly on the painty side of the open lid from the paint can.  The kids sure got a kick out of that.

ME: Julia!  I need to you to come into the bedroom with a wet paper towel!
JULIA: Uh, okay...

Minutes pass

ME: Julia, it's kind of urgent!  I sat in PAINT!
MADELEINE: I'll help!
JULIA: No, I'm coming!

Next thing I knew, both kids were in the bedroom with wet paper towels.

ME: Okay, so just wipe my butt and see how much paint you can get off.

Yup.  That's where I've descended to these days.

Madeleine was admiring my paint work last night.

ME: I have to do some touch up on the trim and the ceiling, though.  See how I got some blue paint on them?
MADELEINE: Well, Mommy, just imagine your ceiling is like...a FLUFFY cloud.  And the blue is just the IMPERFECT parts of the cloud where a little blue sky pokes through.

Again, this kid doesn't need any online learning. Her imagination is working just fine without any schoolwork to do.
