Last Day of Summer Vacation

It's hard to believe that today is the last day of summer vacation!  To commemorate our summer, we took the girls out for ice cream after dinner this evening:

Despite the fact that it has been over 90 degrees all day, the combination of the ice cream and the air conditioned ice cream shop made both girls cold.  In Julia's case, she was so chilly that she actually opted to THROW THE REST OF HER CONE AWAY and snuggle with Ethan to warm up:

I don't think I've ever known Julia not to finish a dessert.  In fact, I'm not sure when she last failed to finish a meal, period.  This is the kid who, after downing an entire chocolate chip bagel on Sunday, asked, "Daddy?  Can I have another bagel?"

Meanwhile, Madeleine made a brand new and exciting discovery with her cone.  Our kids are relative cone novices, as we most always order them ice cream in a kiddie cup.  However, both wanted cones today, and although Julia threw hers out, Madeleine got the WHOLE CONE EXPERIENCE.  As she sat trying to lick the ice cream from inside the cone, I gave her a little pointer.

ME: Madeleine, honey, you can probably just take a bite of your cone now.
MADELEINE: (examining her cone, then taking a chomp out of it)
ME: Is the cone good?
MADELEINE: (taking a look at the ice cream cone with bite out of it, her face lighting up as if discovering a hidden treasure) Hey!  Mama!  MORE ice cream!
ME: That's right!  The ice cream is inside the cone, too!

As she chomped through that cone, Madeleine was also shivering away, but she was bound and determined to eat every last bite of her ice cream.

MADELEINE: (shuddering with cold)
ME: Are you freezing, honey?
MADELEINE: Mmm-hmm.
ME: Do you want to come sit in my lap like Julia is warming up in Daddy's lap?
MADELEINE: No.  That's okay.  Because Mama, sometimes I can HANDLE the cold.

And she did.  She soldiered on with brave resolve:

The hot weather broke while we were in the ice cream shop, which meant we had to drive home through a downpour and thunderstorm.  That didn't stop the girls from their usual window-gazing and commentary on everything they set eyes on.

Driving by the funeral parlor:

JULIA: Hey, Mom, did somebody DIE, because it looks like a BUNCH of people are at the funeral home.
ME: Uh, probably.
ETHAN: That's a pretty safe bet.
MADELEINE: Julia, did somebody get struck by LIGHTNING?

Yep, that's right, Madeleine.  It's the Qwik-E Drive-Thru Funeral Parlor.  Struck dead by lightning in the middle of a thunderstorm?  Not to worry!  Your loved ones will gather immediately to honor your memory!

When we got home, the rain had subsided enough to allow us to get inside without getting soaked, so we really lucked out with our timing.  We're all sad to say good-bye to summer vacation, but Julia is definitely ready for her journey into second grade tomorrow!

  1. Stinker! I'm sad I missed this! I was walking to stupid orientation during the downpour and I was actually thinking "Oh last year around this time we went to Volante farms and I got my first and only sprinkled ice cream cone of the summer" and feeling sad we didn't do it this year!

Maybe if it's this hot after the race on Sunday we can go!
