Last summer, Julia expressed an interest in working as a volunteer for a session of swim lessons at our town pool. Volunteers help out the swim teachers by fetching equipment, helping to set up and clean up, and looking after the kids who are not staying with the rest of the pack during their lesson. Registration for volunteers opened yesterday, so I printed an application form for Julia to fill out.
Clearly, Julia did not feel that reading the form carefully before filling it out was required of a volunteer. Things got off to a great start:
JULIA: (panicked) I messed up ALREADY!
ME: Do you need me to print a new form?
JULIA: (sheepishly) Oookay.
Good choice, although a waste of paper. One wants to put one's best foot forward, and handing in an application with the VERY FIRST THING scribbled out is not very professional. Especially when it's the easiest part of the application to fill out. If you can't get your name right, how are you going to answer "Why do you wish to be a volunteer?"
